As part of my job I invent technologies that get used in many of the electronic devices around us from mobile phones and games consoles to televisions and media chips. I mainly work in video technologies (motion estimation, encode/decode, noise reduction, etc) and graphics technologies (arhitcture research, texture compression, ray tracing, tessellation, etc). As part of that I end up writing several patents each year to protect the things I invent on behalf of my employers.
I've actually got quite a lot of patents now... Some granted and a lot more being examined and gradually moving through the various patent offices around the world. Anyway, the first one that turned up visible to the public was for motion estimation of objects in video:
That one is useful for encoders, decoders, object tracking and frame rate conversion applications.
